XINE releases GPLd code to play DVDs finally!

I didn't read anything here about anything being illegal to use.

Hmm, but I thought Xine could already play DVDs?? Actually, Xine had been able to play them for quite some time, although Ogle was far better suited to the task. But Xine has better at playing mpeg files stored on disk, be it HD or CDROM.

Humm. I thought there was some decoding software necessary to play them which was illegal to use here in the United States.

that situation is still corect... you poor bods over there have to use the patched version to play encrypted DVDs still. The item of new was that Xine now supported Sorensen encoded Qicktime mov files in a true GPL form, whereas before the Sorensen format codec was closed source and couldn't be distributed with the normal version of Xine, you had to go and pay to download the codec IIRC...

I was away on travel and used mplayer to watch 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon', the coolest bit of philosophical chopsaki I've seen!!!

I haven't been able to get the decoder to work with XINE yet. And I've been having trouble getting Ogle to handle DVD menus properly.

I'm not watching or renting anymore movies from anybody until they lift this crazy sillyness.

If a guy pays for a DVD from a store then he should have a right to play that DVD without having to pay more royalties to somebody for a right to use his own DVD.

I felt the same way about Satellite T.V. years ago. If they send the signal down from space and it hit's your yard then it should be your business what you do with it. Not somebody elses.

Bingo... gotcha... you were SO against those Chinese manufacturers taking away the money from American workers when they launched that alternative to DVD...
