So, Win2k has an SMTP server built into the kernel? What do you mean by 'built into'?

I don't think there's too much wrong with Microsoft products, other than their insane licensing schemes and business practices. Some of their products are decent. WinXP is probably decent, as the NT kernel is good. But, you constantly make excuses for Microsoft whenever something they do isn't up to snuff. For example, the WinXP clock applet wasn't flexible enough to allow updating the system time via an unpriveleged port. Ntpd/ntpdate, however, was. Your reaction: blame my ISP.

So why DO you apologize so damned much for Microsoft? Did Bill Gates hire you as his official apologist, or something? You do all the true Windows advocates a disservice with your stupid excuses for Microsoft.

Since when does 'Win2k' mean only the kernel?

It's an SMTP server that you can install if you want to.

Why do you appologize so much for Linux?

You used the words 'built into Win2k'. This implies that it is somehow inside W2k's internals, which possibly means the kernel.

I've never made excuses for Linux like the way you do with Windows. This isn't to say I hate Windows.

Fri, 14 Jun 2002 at 04:31 GMT, peering quizzically at his shoes,

I know of one (that we run) that is currently in release '2000' which could do this while in relase 5 and 5.5. Can't say as for release 4 tho since that was before the actual date this company was started.

Then again, I don't care to name it.

Read 'built into' as synonymous with 'comes with', and everything will become clear.

The SMTP server is built into IIS. No POP server though.

You can install it if you want to or you can not install it if you want to?

Open source doesn't mean everything's GPL. Postfix and Sendmail are not GPL.

Top-posted, mangled quotes, failed to attribute and included sig of previous poster. I say that software does not generate commercial quality posts by default.

Yeah, I know, but at least I /did/ stick to the subject. Almost.

They are not running a Microsoft SMTP server. It is an older version of a big name product.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I discovered this when I was just getting into email services. Not knowing entirely what POP and SMTP were through experience, it drove me completely bonkers.

Gotta hand it to MS to give you half the solution.
