Hi,

I am using icewm on debian SID.

I use pan for newsgroups and evolution 1.4 as a mail client.

I'd like to make the widget fonts (menu, buttons...) smaller.

I called gnome-control-panel, and changed the fonts. The changes in fact did reflect to the GTK apps.

But when I rebooted, these changes were not remembered.

Is there any way around that? What does gnome-control-center write under the hood?

GTK use some 'gtkrc' to control the style of the appearance of the applications. Go to /etc/gtk/ directory and find the gtkrc.* file that correspond to your locale settings. Edit the font entry in this file. Then restart your GTK applications.

I have tried this method in my own Debian 3.0 system and that's ok.

Good luck.

Thanks but... my locale isn't there!

locale gives the following output

LANG=en_US

(And also in dpkg-reconfigure locales I chose en_US)

But the /etc/gtk/ directory doesn't show gtkrc.en*.

What can I do?

Thanks again!

The en_US locale is so common that GTK use the default style. You may find the default gtkrc in /usr/share/themes/Default/gtk/. Maybe in some other place if your Linux distribution is not Debian. That gtkrc is actually empty. So you can copy the content of some other locale's gtkrc in to this file, and just modify the font entry and the name of the style. That may work, although I've never tried that, because I use the zh_CN locale

By the way, ICEWM works fine with GNOME. So you may install the complete GNOME, and do such things more easily in pure GNOME way.

Good luck.

icewm-1.2.8 is the first version that seems to work with Gnome stuff like the pager, the newest deb and source rpm I have seen are still version 1.2.7.
