Hi, is there a tool that will allow me to record any operations taking place on my screen? I'm trying to create an interactive tutorial for my students, and so I need to capture screenshots of some operations. Unfortunately running tools like 'import' or 'xwd' and then converting it to mpeg is not optimal as it takes >2 seconds to capture just one screenshot.

I hate to say this, but - I can't think of anything that will do it for X11 natively on linux - my quick fix would be to run the session using VNC to windoze and then use something like Hypercam to capture the VNCviewer window in real time.
