If you want to advocate Linux to a serious programmer who is unfortunately lost in the world of <OTHER OS>, drop to a command line in a dir full of source code and just do a grep.

grep THAT_DEFINE_I_WANT_TO_CHANGE_AND_FORGOT_WHAT_HEADER

Gets 'em every time.

I like to roll out the fast and dirty RDBMS using grep, cut, sort, uniq and paste on a bunch of seemingly unrelated text files.

I've been using Grep in windows and DOS for something like 15 years... Any programmer worth their salt has been as well. You should be getting a 'so what?' response rather than any kind of recognition.
