The question of taking a chance on open source in mission critical application is discussed by Christopher Dawson in the context of the decisions that had to be made in the library where he works.
I know many other places that use open source on many applications but stick to the safe side when it comes to what is really critical to them and I can really understand it. If you really need something to work and can’t tolerate malfunctions then you need to change to open source gradually and you minimize the chances of something going wrong in the process.
