Use ACLs. Recent kernels can handle them, and they support just as rich

ACLs are currently pretty tricky to do. Not least because for now, RedHat (the original poster wanted to use RedHat, remember?) don't support the kernel modules needed because they're too flaky - see note at bottom of http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/ release-notes/x86/

But if you want to re-compile the kernel, you also need to understand a lot about Windows networking, then juggle Samba with winbind, then be prepared to sweat quite a lot.

I would not recommend the original poster dive into that for a while.
