Did anybody else expirience strange file corruption bugs with 2.4.19 and 2.4.20 (especially those versions which shipped with SuSE 8.1 and 8.2)?

After a reinstallation of my fine server (worked 2 years without probs) files in /bin, /usr/bin, etc. got corrupted after a short period of time (not the filesystem itself, though).

After probing, testing, memtest86, CPU replacement, Memory replacement, etc. I found out that disabling UDMA resolved my problems. (-> sdma1 and disabling dma with hdparm -d 0)

The machine in question has an PIIX4 chipset, which worked fine with 2.4.17 (guess) with UDMA enabled.

Has anybody else seen this? I never overclocked or tuned manually, or something else...

Nope - SuSE 8.1 is running fine with the shipped kernel on my Intel 440BX M/B, which uses that chip. This was an install onto a clean disk, onboard UDMA enabled (as well as for a Promise UDMA100 controller).
