is there a way to mount a NTFS windows 2000 partition read-write? Is there a boot disk available supporting this. I tried leka's but alas it was RO.

Tried whose? If you can find the kernel version that the builder used, you can recompile the kernel and/or modules they used, and remake the boot disk. See the Bootdisk-HOWTO at http://tldp.org/ for details.

Be aware that NTFS write support in Linux is extremely dodgy. If you use it then it is very likely that the NTFS will be corrupted. This is why most distros default to supporting NTFS read only if at all.

If you enable NTFS write support then ensure that your NTFS filesystem is well backed up or worthless. If you neglect the former then it will become the latter

If you are not interested in playing and just want to share data between Windows and Linux, then create a FAT partition for them both to use. Linux FAT support is fine.
