The humorous part is that is doesn't state what he either contributed to or invented, yet, everyone else on the has a explaination why they are on the list. Could we class Butler W. Lampson simply as a cling-on who has never really done anything original.

Also, the 'acknowledgement' of Butler W. Lampson is as about dodgy as the nobel prizes.

Ah yes, the IEEE regularly gives out prestigious awards to researchers for no reason.

Here's more details: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/Features/2001/Jun01/ 06-21msrawards...

Well, let's see. A quick search on Butler Lampson produces a long list of papers in various leading academic publications going back to 1965, in all kinds of important areas of computer science.

A search on Matthew Gardiner finds an article in Shutterbug Magazine. Even if that is the same Matthew Gardiner, it sure looks like Lampson has you beat for meaningful contributions to science.

Also, the press release fails to tell, how long he has been with Microsoft. For all we know, he could have only been with Microsoft for 5 years, and worked for IBM, prior to being head hunted by MIcrosoft.

Also, maybe they should specifically point out the products that Microsoft sells, that have been built upon the research of this person.

Funny enough, he may currently work at Microsoft, none of his inventions or innovations have anything to do with his current employment, i.e. Microsoft does not innovate, but wishes to be credited for the innovation of others. This is a prime example of what has been said all along.

Thanks for helping to make our point.

6 years with MS. Before that, he was with DEC, Xerox PARC, Berkeley. See http://research.microsoft.com/~lampson/WebCV.html The patents look interesting.
