Does anyone have any experience with the MEncoder utility from the Mplayer project?

What I was looking for was a way to convert certain video files that I have from one format to another.

From what I was able to glean from the mplayer site is I can use either mplayer and just play the video and output to a yuv file and then use another utility to convert that to the format I want, or I might be able to do it directly with mencoder, but there is barely any documentation on this at all and no info online.

Sorry for posting this in this group, but I tried some of the more relevant groups and they are all pretty much clueless (of course) since this is Linux and they are all winlusers.

I know you guys are gonna start charging me pretty soon with all the excellent info and advice you all provide me!

Error Log for Mon, 17 Jun 2002 11:57:16 -0400: segfault in module 'Linonut' - dump details are as follows...

Actually I use XINE for playing DVD's and VCD's. It's much better for that task and alot easier to setup IMHO.

Mplayer is faster, lighter and more configurable though. I prefer it when I'm playing media local on drive.

Agreed, tho give it a few more releases and MPlayer will kick ass for DVDs. Libnav functionality is bieng implimented as we speak.

I agree....I much rather would use mplayer for DVD's, as I find it much simpler to do

mplayer -dvd-auth /dev/cdrom1 && mplayer -dvd /dev/cdrom1 1

the first time I watch a DVD to get the DVD key and then play it (using just mplayer -dvd /dev/cdrom1 1) than to have to deal with the libdecss problems I get with Xine. I know, a config/user problem, but I'm a wee bit lazy
