I am using slackware9/kde3.1 and java 1.4.1. Netscape has hung so many times that I am trying to switch to konqueror. Konqueror cann find all my netscape plugins except the java plugin I have gone through the configure konqueror routine and given it the location of the necessary java plugin library, but when I call a page that requires the java plugin I get the message: 'No plugin found for application/x-java-applet'. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JWC

The ultimate reason that I walked, nay ran, away from it.
I'd like to throw out a third alternative: Mozilla. It was forked from the Netscape code base, but it much much more stable.
I find Konqueror to have a handful of nagging annoyances, like java and the more that occasional lockup (but nothing like Netscape), that makes my shy away from it.
Why not give Mozilla a spin. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Konqueror doesn't use the netscape plugin for Java applets. Open the 'Java and Javascript' page in Konqueror setup and fill in the 'Path to java executable' field. Give the path to _java_, not java plugin.

I'm getting confused. Doesn't latest (post-6) Netscape use Mozilla engine? I use NS 7.2 on RH 7.3 - it rarely hangs, or just as much as Mozilla (unlike Galeon, which also uses Mozilla engine). Konqueror is also Mozilla, so is Nautilus.

Yes, but it tends to lag behind a few versions. It also has a bunch of AOL-stuff added.
Konqueror is not Mozilla. The KDE folks have their own rendering engine.
