guys

before i play with linux for the fist time , (red hat 9 , suse 8.2 and mandrake 9.1) i want to try out knoppix to get a fell of linux

i have a knoppix 3.1 which i got a while ago from those nice guys at linux emporium

i have never used this

should i get a 3.2 now or will the 3.1 do

if the 3.2 is more stable and has a lot more goodies in it , then i will get a 3.2

thoughts anyone?

anything i should be aware of when using knoppix?

also whuich is the best thing to use to get microsoft office etc to run under linux , crossover, wine , vm etc etc ?

what are the props and cons of each of these ?

, any others ?

I would try it. There were some language problems with early versions (like the UK keyboard did not work) but I think they were fixed by 3.1.

One tip, if you do not have any scsi devices it is safer to boot with knoppix noscsi without which it somehow managed to lock up on my laptop.

If you have knoppix, saying I want to install version 3.1 is not enough to tell if this is a good distro to install or not. There were several versions of 3.1 produced, and each is defined by its release date. For instance, the most recent version is Knoppix 3.2 (06-06-03) released on June 6, 2003.

I have done the hard drive install on several machines now, and it keeps getting better over time. If you are using a version that outputs German for the hard drive install (knx-hdinstall) you are using a VERY old version, and I would highly recommend upgrading. The new version is in English, and seems very stable in my experience.

Also, you may want to consider joining the forum at www.knoppix.net for information in resolving issues, obtaining information, etc. That group is very responsive, and well moderated. I have always gotten a recommendation, suggestions, or solution (sometimes all three within 24 hours.
