Steve Jobs does not have the ability to become a dictator. It is sort of like why we elect idiots like GW Bush, we don't want someone who is evil AND capable in the office. We just settle for one or the other.

I was IMing with a OS X using friend last night. She mentioned that one of these days she'd get brave and open an xterm and look around. But really, she isn't interested in the command line side of OS X at all. I don't know if she's typical of OS X users, but I wouldn't be surprised.

No, Jobs is brilliant, as is Wozniak. They're just brilliant in different ways. Jobs is a visionary, Wozniak an engineer.

Well GWB sure is evil. He seems to like killing people. Thank goodness that he is an idiot but he seems to be surrouned by idiots as well. Makes for a very dangerous world. Especially if you are a US citizen abroad.
Ok, flame me.

Conceptually, I think of a Mac with OS/X as the UNIX for the non-power-user. I guess Linux 'could' be that, but I think it requires a bit more single minded direction than the Linux camps are willing to do. You said yourself that 'no one tell us where to aim our efforts.' This attitude, while excellent for unprecedented development, is confusing and ust plain too much for the 'non-power-user.'
Perhaps a single distribution of Linux could compete with the Mac, but I don't see one out there that is doing a good job. So far, I think Linux on a peer to peer competition beats Windows for usability for computer illiterates, but I can not say the same for the Mac.
The Mac is easy, simple, and pretty. If it runs *NIX (OS/X) then we still win. Eventually some of the 'non-power-users' will become power users, and Linux will be waiting for them.
