Neither the man nor info pages are clear enough for me.

nuclinux-0.9.4/ nuclinux-0.9.4.tar.bz2 nuclinux-0.9.4.tar.bz2.md5 oio.tar

That's what I have above. I want to check that the nuclinux-0.9.4 package downloaded okay.

Tar says that the md5 file is neither bzip2 nor gzip......When I untarred it I got that last file, which <file> says is data and will not untar with tar.

I appreciate the help.

$ cat nuclinux-0.9.4.tar.bz2.md5 $ md5sum nuclinux-0.9.4.tar.bz2

Are the numbers the same?

I'm presuming you downloaded both the .bz2 and .md5 files from wherever you go this software. If that's the case, then the .md5 should simply be a (very small) file that contains the output of md5sum when run against the .bz2 file. So type:

md5sum nuclinux-0.9.4.tar.bz2

and compare the output with the contents of the .md5 file. If the long string of hexadecimal digits is different, then something is wrong.

Huh?

It doesn't look like such bad advice to me. It's not optimal, and if the md5 file were corrupted in some way then it could make a mess of whatever terminal/console you viewed it on, but basically it ought to work OK.

What do you see as the problem?

I owe you an apology. I ran cat on the untarred bz2.md5 file and it crashed my machine.

But that's not what you said, is it?

Please accept my abject apologies
