I have a notebook that came with Windows ME. I had a friend use Partition Magic to repartition the disk, and then installed Linux. It is dual boot since I occasionally need Windows.

Now I would like to replace the internal hard drive with a bigger one, and I don't know how to do this. I could just reinstall Linux easily enough, but how to avoid losing Windows? (Since the machine didn't come with a Windows install disk, I guess Microsoft doesn't allow that.)

It is possible to get disk mounting adapters that allows you to mount a 2.5' notebook drive in a 3.5' desktop bay. Getting a pair of these would allow you to do a disk-to-disk copy. Except that disk-to-disk copying of MS-Windows file systems is 'tricky', due to the special location of some special boot files. You can do it, you just need the proper software installed on the desktop box you used to do the copy. Copying linix is trivial
