A 'self extraction zip file' - is that an executable binary?

For network file systems, you might consider NFS, Samba or Coda dependent on what degree of security you need. Should the file system be read-only or read/write?

I don't know if Linux supports the mounting of compressed data. Anyone?

AFAICT, there isn't any way to mount an Appletalk (Netatalk, whatever) shared volume on a Linux machine. There isn't even a userspace program analogous to smbclient. The best I could find after Googling was an alpha Appletalk kernel module for the late 2.0 series that wasn't being maintained and was impossible to compile.
